The Historic Seminole Theatre provides a hub for all the arts, not just the performing arts.  The new gallery space in the Seminole Theatre lobby celebrates fine and visual arts and promotes local artists.

The Artist in the Spotlight program (formerly known as “Art in the Chambers”) was created in 2010 by Councilman Shelley to highlight the talents of local artists and allow them to showcase their artwork to the local community. Councilman Shelley is an avid photographer himself and has a passion for the arts. “I know how hard it can be to promote and market your work as an artist, and I wanted to create a program that would help our local artist publicize their work and advance their careers. I also wanted to help promote art in general and art education within our Homestead community” said Councilman Shelley.

On Monday, June 19, the Seminole Theatre will open its doors to the public for a Gallery Night at the Seminole. From 6:30-8:30pm, guests are welcome to browse the artwork on display, meet the featured artist, and enjoy wine and cheese.

The featured artist for June – July 2017 is Norman Walters. He has traveled all through this great country exibiting his amazing art work. He has always tried to make a diffrence in the world, from creating the "Unity Circle of Friends" natural food co-op, beach clean-up on Maui to protecting the Peruvian Amazon Tropical Rainforest.

Former participants of the program found the exposure to be invaluable. South Florida National Parks Camera Club, featured artists of July-August 2015, President Jason Eldridge says, “There are few venues available for clubs to show the work of members; we are grateful for this opportunity to allow our photographers to share their art with the community.” Past participants include: Robert L. Chaplin, Paul Marcellini, Luis Núñez, Brian Trainor, Jessica M. Ujaque, Angeline Marie Martinez, The Children’s Gallery and Arts Center, ArtSouth, Caryl Alarcón, Jesus Marquez, Teresa Slomko, Artist-in-Residence-in-Everglades (AIRIE), Suzanne Moe, Marcela Noriega, Marcia Maynard, Lillian Marlatt, Mimi Dickson, Mary Dee Burkhart, Ruth Campbell, Carol McGunagle, and South Florida National Parks Camera Club.

The installation at the Seminole Theatre was made possible in large part due to a donation from the Friends of the Historic Seminole Theatre. A non-profit founded in 1997 with the goal of restoring the then vacant and dilapidated Seminole Theatre, the “Friends” now work diligently to maintain the Theatre's architectural history and community contribution.

If you are interested in participating or know of a local artist in the area from Broward, Dade or Monroe Counties, please contact Councilman Shelley’s office at (305) 224-4447 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Artists who live within or near the City of Homestead will be given preference over those who live further away.

Our History

The Theatre originally opened on November 26, 1921 as a cinema, primarily showing the then popular silent movies. The Seminole Theatre quickly became the place to go for entertainment and social gatherings in South Dade County and the upper Keys.
